Android devices, sometimes get screen display flickering error. The device screen starts wavering to bright – dim – blurry and even unclear. While this can happen anytime from browsing through the internet to playing games on your mobile device, it is not a serious issue. Screen display flickering usually occurs when you update your OS. This is because the new OS is unable to decide if it is software CPU or hardware GPU. Thus, don’t you worry that there’s something wrong with your device.
Screen display glitches can occur due to various reasons. If you got the screen flickering error just out of nowhere, you can hold the visit to service center after you’ve tried these methods.
#1. Reboot your device
Weird that whenever some software problem arises, majority of the professionals ask, “Have you tried rebooting the device?“ Sounds absurd right? But, what you might not realize is that even if you kill an app, it leaves behind a kind of footprint, usually in the form of background processes.
These “leftovers” hog your system resources. If too much of that goes on, you start to get problems, e.g. a sluggish system, programs that won’t open anymore, etc. Therefore, when you restart your device, every single program and process ends as the power leaves during the restart process. To restart:
- Press and hold the “Power” button until a menu appears.
- Select “Power off“.
- Wait for the device to power off.
- Wait 10 seconds, then press and hold the “Power” button to power the device back ON.
- Check to see if flickering still prevails
#2. Customize Developer Options
First and foremost, here’s what you need to do. You have to enable developers option in your Android device. Android Developer Options allow you to debug apps over USB, capture bug reports, show CPU usage on screen, etc. Developer options also allows you to disable options such as Show surface updates and Disable HW overlays that can cause Android screen flickering issue. In order to enable developer options:
- Go to Settings » Advanced Settings (in some devices)
- Navigate to About Phone
- Find Build Number
- Tap on Build Number several times, until see an alert congratulating you for being a developer
Now all you need to do to fix screen flickering issue on Android platform is to disable HW overlays. In order to, disable HW overlays:
- Go to Settings » Developer Options
- Depending on the smartphone you’re using, Developer options may be located in Advanced Settings or System settings.
- Navigate to Drawing or Hardware Accelerated Rendering section
- If you have Show surface updates switch enabled, disable it
- Also, toggle on Disable HW Overlays
#3. Modify Screen Brightness
Sometimes, your screen may flicker simply because of low light issues. Thus, we recommend you to turn adaptive brightness off. Just drag down your notification panel (or up, depending on your device) and check off Auto Brightness/Adaptive Brightness.
If your device notification panel doesn’t have the auto-brightness settings, then you can always turn to device settings.
Disable Adaptive Brightness
- Go to Settings
- Navigate to Display settings
- Turn Adaptive Brightness off
Unless faulty or damaged hardware is causing your device to flicker, the above methods should solve your issue. However, if the problem still persists, make sure you get your device to the nearest service center.
