There’s not much that’s more convenient than being able to reply to a text message when you smartphone is out of reach. Unfortunately, there aren’t many devices that let you do that. The Fitbit Versa and Versa 2 smartwatches, however, do allow you to send quick replies to text messages, provided you’re using an Android phone. Here’s what you need to know about Fitbit Versa text messages.

Fitbit Versa Texting Limitations

If the ability to text via your Fitbit is a feature you think you’ll use often, there’s something you should know before you begin. You can respond to text messages using the Versa or Versa 2, but you cannot start a new message. Still, having the ability to respond to a text message without picking up your phone is pretty handy.

While the texting feature works on the Fitbit Versa line if you’ve paired it with an Android smartphone, it does not work with Versa models that are paired to an iPhone.

For example, if your phone is in the kitchen and you’re in the living room, there’s no need to grab your phone to respond to the message that just came through from your BFF. You can do it directly from your wrist.

Enabling Text Notifications on Fitbit Versa

Before you can start responding to messages from your Versa or Versa 2, you’ll need to enable text notifications in the Fitbit app. To do that:

  • Open the app and tap the Account icon in the upper left corner.
  • Tap the device name.
  • Tap Notifications.
  • Tap Text Messages.
  • Make sure the option is toggled On. You can also choose what app to receive message notification from on this screen.

Enabling Quick Replies and Voice Replies

On the Fitbit Versa, the way you respond to messages is to use quick replies or emojis. There are several pre-defined Quick Replies to choose from, including:

Open the app and tap the Account icon in the upper left corner.

Tap the device name.

Tap Notifications.

Tap Text Messages.

Make sure the option is toggled On. You can also choose what app to receive message notification from on this screen.

  • ‘Yes’ ‘No’ ‘Sounds Good!’ ‘Can’t talk now — will reply later’ ‘Whats up?’

You can also customize those Quick Replies, as long as you keep the message to 60 characters or less, including spaces.

To enable and customize Quick Replies:

  • Open the Fitbit app, and tap the Account icon in the upper left corner, then tap your Versa.
  • Tap Notifications > Quick Replies
  • Tap Default Replies.
  • On the Text tab, you can customize your Quick Replies options. You can also tap an app icon to change the quick replies that are available for that app, too.
  • On the Emoji tab, you can also customize the emoji available on your Versa. Tap the emoji you want to replace and choose the new emoji from the list that appears.

Quick Replies and Voice Replies With the Fitbit Versa 2

The Fitbit Versa 2 works exactly the same way for Quick Replies, but with Versa 2 you also have the option to use Voice Replies, which is voice-to-text for sending longer messages.

Open the Fitbit app, and tap the Account icon in the upper left corner, then tap your Versa.

Tap Notifications > Quick Replies

Tap Default Replies.

On the Text tab, you can customize your Quick Replies options. You can also tap an app icon to change the quick replies that are available for that app, too.

On the Emoji tab, you can also customize the emoji available on your Versa. Tap the emoji you want to replace and choose the new emoji from the list that appears.

  • In the Fitbit app, tap Account, then tap your Versa Device.
  • Scroll down and tap Notifications.
  • Tap Voice Replies to toggle this feature on.

How to Text on Fitbit Versa

Once you’ve enabled everything in your Fitbit app, you can actually send text responses from your Versa or Versa 2 smartwatch. Here’s how:

In the Fitbit app, tap Account, then tap your Versa Device.

Scroll down and tap Notifications.

Tap Voice Replies to toggle this feature on.

  • When you receive a text message notification on your Versa, tap the message to open it.
  • Tap Reply.
  • Either tap the microphone icon to create a voice to text message, or tap the Quick Reply and emoji you want to use.
  • When you’re satisfied with your response, tap Send.
